Art is for everybody. It does not have to be hard. Enjoy every step you take when exploring your creative side and we will find a way for you to grow independently. When you get the basic tools and feel relaxed, motivated and creative I get very happy. I want you to succeed and feel prepared to more in your artistic journey.

As artists we can gain so much inspiration from travel and experiencing the world – new scenery, exciting new dishes, making new friends, the scents of exotic plants, the different lighting. Travel stimulates all of our senses – all these things heighten our creativity!

Today, if you think of the French Rivera, you probably think of Monaco and Cannes, yachts and beaches, film festivals, casinos, and the Grand Prix.

But before the jet-set and glitterati discovered the area, it attracted artists such as Chagall, Renoir, Matisse and Picasso and many more. The stunning landscape, the climate, the light, and the simple lifestyle enticed them to live and work here.

Situated on the Mediterranean coast, nestled between Italy to the east and the Alps to the north,  the Cote D’Azur gets its name from the amazing blue-green color of the sea after a storm.

The famous Villa Le Reve is just across the road from the Chapel de la Rosarie, which Matisse described as “my masterpiece”. It is the only opportunity to see the villa as it is not open to the public, only to artists and students who stay there. This is an unique chance for you to see this magic villa, for in 2022 Villa Le Reve will shut down as an artist in residence.

7 nights 6 full days (Saturday to Saturday) residential course.

The Villa le Reve is a quiet, secluded French villa on the edge of the village of Vence, about 30 minutes inland from the Nice – Cote D’Azur airport on the French Riveria.

It is a perfect place to go to put all the busy demands of life on-hold for a few days and relax and nurture your creative-side and give yourself some quality time.

This wonderful old French villa is showing it’s age.  Accommodation is modest, as it has not changed much since Matisse lived there. It has 9 bedrooms, 3 art studios, and a huge garden, and is just perfect for an art retreat.

Rooms are single or double, each with very comfortable beds with en-suite shower and sink. Toilets are shared.

Buffet breakfasts and lunches, based on fresh, in-season, healthy Mediterranean ingredients are included, and we will adapt to your allergy and dietary needs.

It was a magical week and a fantastic course, simply, balm for the soul and I feel that I learned a lot and I’m really happy and pleased.

What you will learn.

Each course consists of 10 half-day lessons, Each lesson will start with me teaching and sharing my knowledge and experience with you, and then you will have a couple of hours to try out the new techniques while I circulate and help each student to learn and progress.

These courses will teach you the key techniques of how to paint with watercolors. In both of the courses, we will tap into some of the basics like composition, color, and form which are specific to that course.

We can learn a lot about colors by looking at other artists. We will look at how Henry Matisse and some of the many famous artists that came to the region. Artists like Picasso Paul Signac , Claude MonetPierre-Auguste Renoir , Edvard Munch , Pablo Picasso, and Paul Cézanne ,  came to the Cote D’Azur to paint the special landscape and light,  and there are lots of wonderful portraits painted there too.

The courses will also talk about

  • The essentials about choosing and mixing colors.
  • Tips and tricks on how to stay creative.
  • How to use a sketchbook and travel journals.
  • Basic of watercolor and acrylic paint.

  • These workshops are perfect for beginners and intermediate levels. We also have had professional artists and art teachers who have loved the course and learned a lot. If you have a lot of experience, contact me for more information and I will see if I can adapt the program to your level.
  • You should be prepared to try new things in the spirit of development and exploration.

The house has not changed very much since Matisse lived there. You will have to be open for the charming accommodation, where you share some of the facilities with your fellow students. The standard is not to be considered luxury, but the beds are very comfortable and you have WIFI. There is no cable TV or air conditioning, however, I hold my courses  in spring and autumn where the temperatures are likely to be moderate ( 10 to 24 degrees centigrade. 50 to 77 Fahrenhait ) There is central heating if required.
